Coping with the Cold Weather

In mid-February, the precipitation from Beloit’s first snowfall was still on the ground as the upper Midwest shivered under record cold temperatures. As if to add insult to injury, a ranking with questionable research methods put Beloit at No. 20 on a list of the nation’s “21 coldest colleges.” Students from Alaska shrugged, while others found ways to deal with an unusually long winter. Here’s how a few of them are coping:

  • "All the snowpants, all the time."
  • "Wear a scarf and two pairs of pants. I have a ski mask too, but I don't wear it as much because then it's like: 'Who is this creep in the ski mask?'"
  • "Whiskey and blankets. And lots and lots of green tea. About eight cups a day."
  • "I would cry, but my tears would freeze."
  • "I haven't shaved in awhile, so I guess that's how I'm coping."
  • "It's crazy. I have to wake up 15 minutes earlier just to put on more clothes."
  • "I swear a lot and turn my heated blanket on 20 minutes before I plan on going to bed."
