The wildly popular Mindset List is spawning a book. Mindset List authors Tom McBride, Keefer Professor of the Humanities, and Ron Nief, Director Emeritus of Public Affairs, have applied and expanded their approach to understanding the generation gap in their forthcoming book titled They’ve Never Dialed a Telephone: The Mindset Lists of American History.

In keeping with the annual lists that look at the cultural touchstones shaping the world of entering college students, the book considers what growing up was like for every American generation since 1880.

For high school graduates in 1918, for instance, a ride in an elevator was seen as a thrill second only to a roller coaster. Students entering college in 1957 could not imagine life without zippers, and 2009 high school graduates have always considered “friend” an active verb.

The book is scheduled to be available in bookstores by July 2011.
