Wisconsin Angel: Cordelia Harvey, Civil War HeroineBy Jane Walrath Solem’41

Hartington Press

Lake Mills, Wis., 2009

Wisconsin Angel is a historically accurate portrait of Cordelia Harvey, widow of 1861 Wisconsin Governor Louis Harvey, and Midwestern heroine. Through her persistence and courage, Cordelia saved the lives of tens of thousands of Union soldiers by establishing and maintaining good hospitals in the north. Beyond providing humanitarian aid, Cordelia’s efforts helped advance women’s liberation and expanded women’s roles in American society. In Wisconsin Angel,

Solem weaves creative prose with historical documents to create a captivating and authentic tale. Solem was inspired to write Wisconsin Angel after stumbling upon a local historical marker honoring Louis and Cordelia Harvey. Shortly after she finished the book, circumstances caused her to set the manuscript aside. That was nearly 40 years ago. Last year, her family convinced her that it was too good to be stowed away. Now, with the author at age 90, this historically valuable work is finally available to the public.
