In his first novel, Out of the Comfort Zone, Agin crafted a story based on his experiences playing football at Beloit College. In Rival, he again uses his history as a lifelong athlete to set the backdrop for a dramatic tale.

Set in a small town in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Rival is a story of the triumphs and struggles of youth, and the indomitable power of the human spirit. The novel centers on Mickey Ford, a high school senior and football star for the Hancock Bulldogs, a team that has been locked in a rivalry with the neighboring Houghton Gremlins for as long as anyone can remember.

Mickey’s life is struck by tragedy, and he finds himself completely thrown out of his element. With no family to call his own and his social life uprooted, Mickey faces contempt from new peers and a growing separation from old friends.
