Three 2010 Beloit College graduates have received Fulbright student awards to teach English overseas. This highly competitive program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and funded by Congress, will take Katherine Lindemann’10 (Brunswick, Maine) to Germany and Anna Bryan’10 (Arlington, Va.) and Phillip Thomas’10 (Columbus, Ohio) to Russia.

Lindemann, an international relations and modern languages double major, spent her entire senior year studying abroad. In the fall, she was in Osaka, Japan, at Kansai-Gaidai University; in the spring, she studied in Berlin.

Bryan, a Russian major, and Thomas, who majored in French and Russian, both studied abroad in Moscow during the fall 2008 semester through Beloit’s exchange program with the Russian State University for the Humanities.

The Fulbright Student Program awards the grants based on students’ leadership potential, academic and professional excellence, and a commitment to mutual understanding. On average, about 4,500 Fulbright awards are granted to recent graduates.

The three will continue to conduct their research projects while abroad, and Bryan will precede her Fulbright stint by interning at the Center for Strategic and International Studies this summer, researching human rights in Russia.
