So much of what makes it “a great day to be a Beloiter” was on display in one 24-hour period during Beloit’s 162nd Commencement weekend:

  • 323 graduates (multitalented individuals from 41 states and nine countries, including three with Fulbright awards)
  • 2 prominent civil rights activists, Michael Young’69 and James Zwerg’62, recognized with honorary doctorates
  • 7 McNair Scholars headed for their respective doctoral programs, representing 100 percent of the program’s graduates this year
  • 35+ gifts from seniors, mostly inanimate turtles, signed and strewn about the front lawn of the President’s House on Commencement eve (a photo gallery is online)
  • 136 faculty members, decked out in head-to-toe academic regalia
  • 79 acres of idyllic campus landscape, primped and planted for the Big Day
  • $12,000: the dollar amount of the class of 2012 gift after Scott and Melody Bierman filled the gap between it and the $9,813 graduates raised. The class gift will go toward helping future Beloiters with financial need purchase their textbooks.
  • 26 sweet voices of the college Chamber Singers, performing Domine Salvam Fac
  • 14.5 hours of uninterrupted sunshine
  • 1 garden gnome riding a turtle in a surprise re-appearance on the Commencement stage (see the full story)
