In Memoriam Matthew MarvinMatthew Marvin, a philanthropist, civic leader, and longtime supporter of Beloit, died on Dec. 15, 2013, in Freeport, Ill. He was 99.

Matt’s support for Beloit included the establishment of the Matthew A. Marvin Endowed Scholarship, which assists students with financial need transferring to Beloit from Illinois community colleges. He also funded a major renovation of the Marvin Field House on campus in 1989 and created an endowed fund in athletics that allowed the college, among other things, to hire a dedicated athletic director for the first time. He received an honorary doctorate from Beloit in 2004.

A lifelong Freeport resident, he was a well-known leader and supporter of charitable causes in his hometown. He kept track of area young people by clipping newspaper articles about their accomplishments, sending them encouraging notes, and often urging them to enroll at Beloit. Matt served in World War II and took part in the landing at Utah Beach during the Normandy Invasion. He studied political science for two years at Beloit before leaving to run The Marvin Agency, his family’s insurance and real estate business, from which he retired in 1991. At Beloit, he was a member of Beta Theta Pi, and later served as a class officer.

He is survived by two cousins and many extended family members and friends.
