By Madeleine Roux’08
In her debut young adult novel, writer Madeleine Roux tells the story of 16-year-old Dan Crawford and two other teens who have enrolled at a New Hampshire College Prep program for the summer. They arrive on campus to discover that regular college housing is closed, and they’ll be staying instead in a freshly painted, yet ominous building nearby that once served as a psychiatric hospital.
From the start, the new friends get strange vibes from their summer digs. When clues about the hospital’s past start surfacing in the form of old photographs and notes, they begin to see that they are piecing together a disturbing history about the sanatorium, which ultimately circles back to them.
In her acknowledgments, Roux thanks Beloit College for being the physical inspiration for New Hampshire College, and apologizes for turning Beloit into a haunted campus.
