The 2013-14 academic year rolled out with pomp and enthusiasm, despite a late August heat wave that pushed temperatures into the upper 90s. The class of 2017 and new transfer and exchange students arrived at Beloit on Aug. 19 for New Student Days, a week before returning students moved in. Of 341 newly arrived students, 301 are first-years, 25 are transfer students, and 15 are new exchange students. Their top home states are Illinois (78), Wisconsin (50), Minnesota (20), Texas (15), California (14), Massachusetts (10), and New York (9). While new students came this year from as far away as Romania and South Korea, eight are graduates of Stateline-area high schools, including Beloit Memorial and F.J. Turner in Beloit, as well as schools in Janesville and Brodhead, Wis., and Rockton, Ill.
