FYI: A review of this year's seminars

November 1, 2013 at 8:22 am

New students launched their Beloit educations in August when they began their First-Year Initiatives (FYI) seminars a week before regular classes. Part of the Initiatives program, which prepares them for life at Beloit, FYI courses are built around ideas rather than single academic subjects. Students choose seminars based on interests instead of intended majors. FYIs continue through December.

10 of the 20 seminar titles offered in 2013:

  • The Elements of Identity
  • The Nature of Time
  • Treatments and Cures: Why, When, and How We Address Human Disease
  • Is That a Good Idea? Generating and Evaluating Provocative Proposals
  • Up: A Natural History of Flying
  • Seeing is (Dis)believing: Questioning Social Media Culture and Visual  Pedagogy
  • The War on Terror
  • Business, Culture, and Ethics in the Global Marketplace
  • The Healthy City
  • Invisibility
