Beloit’s plans to reimagine a decommissioned power plant along the Rock River as a sustainable, fully integrated student union and recreation center have reached a turning point.

An endorsement by the Beloit College board of trustees to pursue state and federal historic incentives (commonly called “tax credits”) came in October, while the generosity of major donors—including trustees who pledged $17 million toward the $38 million project—put the Powerhouse on the fast track.

If tax credits come through as expected, the project will move into its final phase of fundraising, and the Powerhouse will be within reach for current first-year students to enjoy their senior year. The facility is slated to open in the fall of 2019.

The Powerhouse will be funded completely by donors, with no tuition dollars going toward the project. With Powerhouse fundraising racing toward the finish line, more detailed work needs to be done, including the process of taking the schematic design from its current 50 percent status to 100 percent completion.

A team of students, faculty, and staff, led by Dean of Students Christina Klawitter’98 convened in October to focus on feedback solicited earlier from college stakeholders, gather additional input, and work with designers at Studio Gang Architects, the internationally celebrated design firm that is partnering with the college on the building.

New schematic designs are expected to be completed by April 2017, with construction slated to begin in February 2018. Details are available on the college’s website: www.beloit.edu/powerhouse.
