The city of Beloit and Beloit College were awarded a $1,009,158 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to extend a walkway on the east side of the Rock River alongside Alliant Energy’s Blackhawk Generating Station.

The new section of the river walk will stretch along the river side of the former power station that the college plans to turn into a waterfront activity and recreation center.

Besides bringing improved community access to the riverfront, the path will connect to an existing walkway that extends from downtown Beloit to beyond Riverside Park, one that is named for Steve Gregg’80, a Beloiter who was important to the college and the city.

In 2011, the original part of the walkway was named the Steve Gregg Memorial Path to honor the city of Beloit’s longtime assistant city manager. Gregg was an avid cyclist and runner who passed away unexpectedly in 2010.

The grant funds are part of the federal Transportation Alternatives Program.
