After nearly two years of buildup to the 2013 lacrosse teams’ debut at Beloit in March, the excitement wasn’t contained to Strong Stadium, or the athletic department, or even the campus. Many fans, alumni, athletes, the teams’ coaches, and lacrosse-players’ parents took to Twitter to express their excitement about lacrosse.
“Beloit College’s FIRST Men’s Lacrosse Team is formed, and my son @tjacks31 is a Captain! I’m so proud! GO BUCS!” tweeted @markcjackson1 in January. He also urged everyone to attend the first game.
Even future Buccaneers were tweeting about the program.
“Getting ready to fly to Wisconsin at 4 a.m. to go meet with Beloit College admissions and the lacrosse coach plus get to meet the team So HAPPY,” tweeted @JakeTrainor5 in September. By Jan. 31, he’d made it official: “Officially playing college lacrosse at Beloit College in Wisconsin!!”
Both the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams had their home openers set for the first few weeks of March. They are the first official teams fielded by the college, though intercollegiate lacrosse was played at Beloit as a club sport as early as the 1980s.
“The excitement and anticipation for our competitive season is palpable,” Head Women’s Coach Meredith Newman said in a February post on the Terrarium, the campus internal news website. “Moment by moment we are laying the groundwork and writing the history of Beloit lacrosse, creating traditions that will last for years to come.”
