Nazareth, North DakotaBy Tommy Zurhellen’91

Kensington, Md., 2011

In his debut novel, Tommy Zurhellen crafts an artful retelling of a young Messiah that is anything but your average allegory. Taking place across the Badlands of North Dakota from the 1980s to the present, the book is populated with characters both memorable and meaningful, from a corrupt town sheriff to a fugitive mother whose newfound child—rescued from the stoop of a ratty motel—just might be the Messiah. KISS cover bands, fire-and-brimstone preachers, and a stray carnival elephant all make appearances.

Hailed as “richly imagined,” “weird and tender,” and “written with empathy, force and verve,” Nazareth, North Dakota does more than update the New Testament—it humanizes iconic stories integral to Christian tradition in imaginative and compelling ways.
